Health and Disease: Insomnia

Just about every person is likely to have some kind of sleep problems at one time or another. When and if this happens to you, you don't necessarily have to head straight for the doctor or the sleeping tablets, because there is a variety of natural remedies available for you to try. So don't just put up with it and toss and turn through the night, try out some natural sleep solutions. You never know, they might just work for you and help you to get a good night's sleep and feel a whole lot better the next day. Below is some information on natural sleep solutions, or herbal insomnia remedies.

There are many reasons why people might suffer from sleep problems, including the following:

* health issues
* mental issues
* physical problems

A good night's sleep is most important for everybody, every day, for physical and emotional wellbeing, and when we are having difficulty sleeping we often tend to consult the doctor. However there are now various natural and herbal remedies for sleep problems on the market which you could try instead, and which could save you having to spend your time and money on a doctor's visit.

Natural sleep remedies are made from herbs, however even though a remedy's ingredients are herbal, and hence natural, this does not mean that they are necessarily safe for everybody, so you do need to do a little research first, before you select one. Most of these herbal remedies do not have any side effects, but there are some which can, so use a little caution and check out the ingredients before you try one out.

One commonly used ingredient in sleep remedies is chamomile, which has been shown in research to have a similar soothing effect to that provided by prescription sedatives. It is also safe for pregnant women and nursing mothers to take, and is usually consumed as a tea.

Hops are another herb which can be used to help you to sleep. Just put some dried hops inside your pillowcase, so that you breathe in the aroma when you lie on it, and they should help you to sleep and to wake up feeling relaxed. You can also take hops in the form of tea or in capsules.

Another commonly used sleep remedy is lavender, which is used in the following types of product:

* candles
* aromatherapy oils and soaps * body lotions

If lavender is your preferred choice of sleep remedy, then be very careful not to buy Spanish lavender, because this actually has stimulant properties, and would therefore have the opposite and very unwelcome effect of making it difficult for you to get to sleep.
